Kurt Cobain’s Daughter Opens Up About Her ‘Guilt’ Over Inheriting His Fortune

Frances Bean Cobain earns a lot of money from her late father Kurt Cobain’s legacy, and she has complicated feelings about it. T

he 26-year-old chatted with RuPaul on a recent episode of the RuPaul: What’s the Tee? podcast. She got extremely real about her finances, her parents, her music career, and other personal topics. Frances’ father Kurt, the frontman of the band Nirvana, died by suicide in 1994. Frances reportedly earns $95,000 a month from Kurt’s publicity rights.

“My relationship to money is different because I didn’t earn it,” she admitted on the podcast. “And so it’s almost like this big, giant loan that I’ll never get rid of.” She went on to explain that she feels “guilt” over the money because she didn’t earn it herself and didn’t get to know her father.

a musician herself, Frances has followed in her late father’s footsteps. Last year, she told E! News she hoped that her father “would be proud of the human being I am.” Frances Bean Cobain, the only child of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, is now 26 years old. In case you weren’t feeling old enough lately! She’s now a musician herself. She also happens to be quite rich, thanks to her late father’s estate.

Frances recently opened up about her relationship with her father’s fortune on an episode of the podcast RuPaul: What’s the Tee? She revealed that she actually feels guilt about having the money. “

relationship to money is different because I didn’t earn it,” she said. “I have an almost foreign relationship to it or guilt because it feels like money from somebody that I’ve never met, let alone earned myself.” Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994, when Frances was only 2 years old.

People reports that Frances earns over $95,000 a month from her father’s publicity rights. Frances has referred to herself as a “trust-fund baby” and as “the O.G. Blue Ivy.” She says it was difficult, at first, for her to learn how to manage her own money.

She has also struggled with addiction, which undoubtedly makes it harder to budget responsibly. But in 2016, she got sober, and she’s taken more control over her own lifestyle and finances since then.

I'd say in the last two years, I’ve taken real accountability at looking at every little thing and talking with the people in charge of my money,” she explained. “And also realizing that you don’t have to live lavishly to live well.” The one way that I was shown how to live was to… live beyond your means and live in excess.

It took me stepping away from that and getting sober in order to realize that no matter how much money you think you have, it’s not permanent.” Frances also opened up about a few other topics, including her evolving relationship with her mother and her approach to her own music career.

“She’s a really good person,” she said of her mother, Courtney Love. “This is what I like to call the era of balance, and I hope that we’re bringing in the era of balance. Most importantly, Frances says she’s reached a new level of self-love and peace.

“I’ve come to this place where I really love who I am and I feel like I’m thriving in myself,” she said. “I think that’s the ultimate goal as part of the human experience, is to get to the point where you can say [that] and not in a narcissistic way, in a loving way.” Frances is busy with her own music career now — and of course, people can’t help but compare her to her dad.
